Karachi is a city in Sindh, the southernmost province of Pakistan (dubbed the 'Land of Uncertainties' by ancient travellers who traipsed through the arid deserts of Persia and Balochistan for long, arduous weeks towards the Indus River - only to discover that its valley was heartbreakingly barren).

Karachi sprawls like no other city in Pakistan, but has few obvious landmarks. The airport is about 10km (6.2mi) east of the city centre and can be reached by taxi and bus. The Cantonment Railway Station is south of Dr Daud Pota Rd and the City Railway Station is on the south side of Chundrigar Rd. The town centre is known as Saddar (also referred to as Saddar Bazaar), with numerous hotels, a busy shopping district and historic bazaars. The southern seaside district of Clifton is one of the city's most exclusive areas.

Some areas are known by their abbreviations, such as PECHS (Pakistan Employment Cooperative Housing Project) and DHA (Defence Housing Authority).
